People doing vision dispensing often run into two kinds of troublesome products: black plastic housings that image as dead black with no locatable features, and metal or glass surfaces that blow out white the moment light hits. Both problems occur at the same step \u2014 imaging, not dispensing. With the right lighting scheme, most black and reflective positioning problems can be solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Why Black and Reflective Products Are Hard to Image<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The difficulty with black products is light absorption<\/strong>. Black surfaces absorb most incident light; the camera receives little reflection, the image is dark overall, and the gray contrast between features and background is too low for the algorithm to extract contours. Reflective products are the opposite: specular or high-gloss surfaces like metal and glass concentrate reflection into the lens, locally overexposing the image with bright spots and ghosting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Four Lighting Methods for Reflective Surfaces<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For reflections, the industry has four mature approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, low-angle lighting.<\/strong>Light strikes at an angle close to the surface, so reflected light does not enter the camera directly; keeping rays nearly parallel to the surface also highlights surface relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second, diffuse shadow-free lighting<\/strong>. Light is diffused and illuminates evenly from many angles, compensating for surface angle variations and producing a more uniform image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third, coaxial lighting<\/strong>. Light is directed along the camera axis via a beam splitter; since reflected light shares the lens axis, it effectively removes ghosting \u2014 especially good for mirror-smooth surfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fourth, polarizer combinations<\/strong>. Polarizing filters mounted in front of both lens and light source and rotated to the right angle filter out specular reflections. Crossed polarizers block most mirror reflection and markedly suppress glare and overexposure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Enhancing Imaging of Black Products<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For black products the idea is to add light and extend dynamic range<\/strong>. Two proven practices:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

one is the dome light<\/strong>, where light reflects off a hemispherical dome from many directions onto the workpiece \u2014 ideal for curved, complex glossy-black parts;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

two is HDR high-dynamic-range imaging<\/strong>, which rapidly captures multiple frames at different exposures in the same scene and fuses them, preserving highlight detail while revealing shadow detail \u2014 very effective for surfaces containing both extremely bright and dark regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition,combined multi-angle bar lights<\/strong>also help \u2014 low-angle light is sensitive to raised edges and scratches, high-angle light reveals recesses; combined use highlights feature contours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Support at the Algorithm and Equipment Level<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Beyond imaging there are two more layers of assurance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

at the algorithm level, image filtering, contrast stretching and edge sharpening<\/strong>can enhance shadow detail and stabilize feature extraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

at the equipment level, matching light source to camera matters \u2014 wavelength, size and uniformity of the light must be tuned to the camera's response<\/strong>. Black products are hard because absorption lowers contrast; reflective products are hard because specular reflection overexposes. Handle reflections with low-angle lighting, diffuse shadow-free light, coaxial light and polarizer combinations; enhance black products with dome lights and HDR multi-exposure fusion; with algorithm preprocessing and light-camera matching, the vast majority of black and reflective products achieve stable positioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
